" I would have you to know, " said the baron, in his strident 'voice, and leaning over toward Cortis, " I would have you to know, and I don't care a rush if this gentle- man knows it too, that I have debts, many debts, but that I am a ten, a hundred, a thousand times more noble than your most noble Signori Carre, and your most highly virtuous aunt, and that most highly -born gentle- man, her brother-in-law, who gave me without any difficulty, somebody who was worth a great deal more than they were, and more than I am, and who now fight with tooth and nail to defend a paltry sum of money; they refused it to me when it would have been of real use, they persuaded that person to lie, I believe, for the first time in her life ; they made game of me, and now that they are afraid of their good name, and for their reputation as generous and honest people, they come and offer it to me !
