They regulate our trade, instruct us in morality, decide our disputes, give us our holidays and keep order in the streets. Oldswick, as I think I have already mentioned, was one of them.
‘All to do with this sickness, so the man Mallender said. But Mr Oldswick’s—’ ‘Not well enough to attend, that is obvious,’ I interrupted again, remembering why I was here.
