As I look back through my life's companionships I can recollect few men for whom I formed as great a personal at- tachment as I did for Colonel Gaillard. Colonel Gaillard 's work was located for about nine miles along the Culebra Cut. My sanitary i...nspections nearly every week took me to some part of his work.
82 I would usually telephone him the day before, let- ting- him know where my sanitary inspections would carry me, and ask him to appoint a place and hour where and when we should meet. In this way we gen- erally spent half a day together nearly every week. These expeditions are among the most agreeable recollections which I retain of the Isthmus. He was always bright, cheerful, witty and entertaining.
I was naturally interested in the great engineer- ing problems which he had in hand, and these he had the faculty of making most clear and interest- ing to my non-engineering mind.
