Hotspot’s hooves grated on the sandy river bottom. Ashore and just a few yards away from Ryan, the mare shook like a big brown-and-white dog.
Slowly, moving in millimeters, Ryan lowered his book to the ground beside him, unable to resist watching as Hotspot came to him. Placing her faintly striped hooves with great precision, she picked her way around her bareback pad and then her bridle.
