By circular issued from this Office June 7, 1876, Marshals of the United States were informed of an Opinion given, May 29, 1876, by the Acting Attorney General, upon the question whether a Marshal is entitled to mileage on each writ served by him when several, issued on behalf of the Gove...rnment, to be served on different persons, are or might be served at the same time, only one travel being necessary to make the service on all of said persons. The opinion was that there could be but one mileage allowed upon several writs in hand at the same time, requiring travel to the same place or in the same direction.
This view was thereupon made the rule for adjusting accounts for travel. It was based upon the last clause of the 7th section of the Act of Congress approved February 22, 1875, 18 Stats., 334, which declares that "no such ofiBcer (i.
