The principle of vertical equity underlies the progressive income tax. This involves those with higher incomes paying a larger tax burden. The principle of horizontal equity is to treat people in like economic circumstances similarly.
Vertical equity • The benefit of tax-exemption for income from the exercise of fishing rights would be available to all Indians regardless of the level of their other income. Because income tax rates rise with income, the higher the income, the more benefit one can receive from tax-exemption.
