Its best known occurrences are in Allemont, Dauphine; Annaberg and Schneeberg, Saxony; Cobalt, Ontario, and mines in Colorado and Nevada. Variscite (A1PO 4 -2H 2 O) Variscite is a bright green mineral that has recently come into use as a gem material. It is apparently an aluminium phosphate with a theoretical composition as follows: 44. 9 per cent P 2 Os; 32. 3 per cent Al 2 Os and 22. 8 per cent H 2 O. A specimen of crystallized material from Lucin, Utah, gave the following analysis: A1 2 O 3 ...Fe 2 O 3 CrO 3 V 2 O 3 H 2 O Total 44. 73 32. 40 . 06 . 18 . 32 22. 68 100. 37 Recent investigations indicate that the compound A1PO 4 2H 2 O is dimorphous. Both forms are orthorhombic but one, variscite, has the properties described under this heading. The other, lucinite, is associ- ated with variscite, near Lucin, Utah. It, however, occurs in crystals that are octahedral in habit, rather than tabular, and that have an axial ratio of . 8729 : i : . 9788. In other respects lucinite is very much like variscite.
