Action in India, on receiving Lord Stanley's orders to restore the Principality eventually to its young Rajah Decision not to restore it. THE first intimation of the decision of the Home Govern- ment in this case must have reached Lord Canning at latest in the beginning of July, 1858, * and the despatch formally announcing the orders of the Home Govern- ment reached him before the en...d of that month ; Colonel Durand being then on special duty with him at Allahabad. After a few weeks' consideration, the Gqvernor-General made up his mind to set Lord Stanley at defiance, and flatly disobey his orders ; and on the 12th of August, 1858, Mr. Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, was directed by him to write as follows to Sir Robert Hamilton, who had then re- sumed charge at Indore : " The Right Honorable the " Governor- General sees no reason whatever to alter or " modify the orders conveyed to you on the 8th of " February last, regarding the disposal of the treasure " and other property found in the fort of Dhar ; nor " can his Lordship perceive any reasonable grounds for " questioning the justice of the decision conveyed in my " letter dated 7th of December, 1857, as to the seques- " tration of the Dhar State.
