It is in the melody itself, which has, with its particular turns and sudden vocal vistas, a feeling both of physical effort and of sudden perspective, a glimpse of the sea. I give the children coins and candy that are the traditional reward for the songs, and hear them beginning the cycle down the hall, before I have shut the door.
