Active and inactive members never have a choice when hired into a position allowing optional membership. They are already members, and they must remain members. Only nonmembers will be given a choice. To become a nonmember, a member must with- draw from the PERS and have a 30-day break in service. Even when members withdra...w, they will not have a choice unless they have a 30-day break in service. For example, m the following situations, membership is not optional: An active member accepts a position which provides less than 960 hours per fiscal year. The member remains an active member. An inactive member accepts a position which provides less than 960 hours per fiscal year. The inactive member remains a member but becomes an active member. A member who is elected or reelected to an office must continue membership.
