On the third day, as a rule, phenomena of collapse are evident ; vomiting, which may have ceased, may return and even become stercoraceous. The stools contain only blood and mucus by this time. In grave cases, especially in children, death occurs in this state of collapse. The abdomen presents in many cases the characteristic tumor, but meteorism is observed in only about one- third of all cases. Other clinical types present a stormy onset, after which the violent symptoms abate, and the practi...tioner is confronted with the signs and symptoms of chronic enterostenosis. Invagina- tions which involve the small intestine, the ileac and the ileocecal form, as a rule set in vehemently and abruptly, whilst those in which the colon or rectum alone is involved exhibit a more gradual development. The more acute cases may terminate in temporary spontaneous cure by sequestration of the intussusceptum or in death from strangulation. The slower types terminate fatally also by grad- ual emaciation and exhaustion, in consequence of pain, loss of sleep^ and malnutrition.
