What reading level is Disgrace book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Defeated. It is not hard to imagine Lucy in ten years' time: a heavy woman with lines of sadness on her face, wearing clothes long out of fashion, talking to her pets, eating alone. Not much of a life. But better than passing her days in fear of the next attack, when the dogs will not be enough to protect her and no one will answer the telephone. He approaches Petrus on the site he has chosen for his new residence, on a slight rise overlooking the farmhouse. The surveyor has already paid his vi...sit, the pegs are in place. 'You are not going to do the building yourself, are you?' he asks. Petrus chuckles. 'No, it is a skill job, building,' he says. 'Bricklaying, plastering, all that, you need to be skill. No, I am going to dig the trenches. That I can do by myself. That is not such a skill job, that is just a job for a boy. For digging you just have to be a boy.' Petrus speaks the word with real amusement. Once he was a boy, now he is no longer. Now he can play at being one, as Marie Antoinette could play at being a milkmaid.

Did Lucy give birth to a girl or a boy?Who was the father? How did the relationship between Petrus and Lucy turn out? How did David’s opera go? How did Malanie’s career go? There were so many questions that were not solved, so many things with no ends. Then with 'Are you giving him up?' 'Yes, I am giving him up.' The story ended. I didn’t expect the end to come so quick and so sudden. What is this story about? Disgrace? Whose disgrace? David’s disgrace of being dismissed from the university after he had had an affair with his student? Lucy’s disgrace of being raped by three men yet being not able to bring the three criminals to justice? Maybe both, I don’t know. Lucy is a character whose way of thinking and actions was a puzzle to me; she was raped by three black men, yet she chose not to tell the police that; she was impregnated by them, yet she chose not to do anything about it. David asked her to leave the farm, the scene of crime, to put everything behind her, but she wouldn’t leave. What was she thinking? Making some sort of sacrifice of herself for the whole humanity’s progress? I have no idea. And David as well, he didn’t have to lose his position at the university, yet he wouldn’t try, it was like he was also making some sort of sacrifice of himself to prove the righteousness of his passion or sexual desire. But look how it turned out, dismissed, be given the cold shoulder, an unfinished opera that probably would be stillborn.
