" But after seeing the casts, which were for- 112 DR DUNCAN OF RUTHWELL warded to him by coach, he writes to say, " I am strongly inclined to come over in toto to your opinion on the subject. " This conclusion was arrived at by making tortoises walk over soft dough and wet earth. Many eminent geologists at first ridiculed the idea of the footprint theory, but Dr Buck- land was his firm ally. He showed the casts to Chantrey, the sculptor, who absolutely agreed with Dr Duncan.
