Al- though the building appears to be an oblong, it is, as were many of the older churches, square, roofed with a gable roof, and terminated with a porch and tower. The interior is covered with a flat dome, supported on four columns, which also carry galleries. The church is the most famous in Georgia and very properly so, since it is quite the handsomest in the city, and one of which any commimity might well be proud. The Monumental Church in Richmond, Virginia, is in de- sign unique in this c...ountry, and resembles rather a musemn or a banking structure than a church. It was built in 1812, Robert Mills being the architect, and was evidently very strongly influenced by the Classic movement then just begin- ning, but it was handled with such freedom and vigor that we are compelled to beUeve its architect to have been a great and original thinker. The treatment of the columns between piers is of course a well-known Greek motif, very unusual in early American work, but has become to-day a favorite method of treating a narrow fagade, since the corners are a z o % a W u b!
