The church was necessarily the community center, people learned to work together and depend on... each other, and real neighborliness was the spirit of lovely Auburndale. Dr. Alexander McKenzie wrote, "Our fellowship was not merely a matter of enjoy- ment, it was a matter of usefulness." Tea parties and Sewing Circles, approved by New England orthodoxy, were really social dissipations.
There were occasional home and church weddings, which were most festive.
The boys of the town used to mix much more freely with the Lasell girls than is possible now : and as a great many families had boarders who were interesting people, the residents of the village were not wholly de- pendent upon themselves.
