Thus the English muse, if less delicate and dainty than her French sister, was less artificial ; if more pas- sionate, was less lascivious ; and in her enthusiasm for what is grandly colossal, her joy in the actual, she showed, even when repeating foreign romances, many of the features that were to characterise her in the time of her full splendour.
