To these points, which I mentioned in my former paper, I need not again recur, but I may add one or two particulars in regard to the traditionary founder of Rathen — who is commemorated in the Aber- deen Calendar on Dec. 2, under the name of Ethernanus, and described as a Bishop who led a hermitical life ...in that parish. His proper name was probably Ernan, which, in the local dialect has become Eddran.
Some authors make Ernan or Ethernan a nephew of S. Columba. It is known that the Saint had relatives of that name — ^both an uncle and a nephew — but neither of them are ever styled bishops. The name in fact was then very common. Dr. Reeves, in the notes to his edition of Adamnan*s life of S. Columba, says there are twenty-six in the Irish Calendar — ^and some of them, like our Buchan Saint, appear under various guises, such as Martian and Marnoch — said to be ab- Digitized by Google 55.
