When the people come rushing into the open space in front of the Kremlin walls, eager to know what is the meaning of the alarm, they arc- told that the Poles are attacking the boyars, and intend to kill the Tsar, whereupon they immediately rush off to attack those unsuspecting foreigners.
Then with a drawn sword in one hand, and a cross in the other. Prince Shouisky enters the Kremlin, followed by the armed conspirators.
Aroused by the' clang of bells, the Tsar at first believes what one of the... conspirators tells him, that a fire has broken out in the city. But pre- sently he sees the armed array of Shouisky 's followers advancing, and too late the truth flashes upon his niind. After a vain attempt to defend the palace, he sees that his only chance of escape de- pends upon his being able to make his way to where the people are crowding together on the other side of the Kremlin walls. Outside his palace stands some wooden scaffolding, erected at the time of the wedding illuminations. He rushes into his wife's chamber, and calls to her to save herself, then, leaping from one of the windows upon the woodwork, he tries to escape along it.
