"In this matter of internal evidence, there is not a shred to render Lydgate's authorship probable . . . That a series of reprints, begin- ning with the year 1775, should have firmly connected this poem with Lydgate's name, is but one of the freaks of literature; the existence of such a series of reprints does not, however, add a jot to the evidence for Lydgate as author of the poem.
