The meaning of this plainly is that a man's actions result from the state of his mind ; that if that is healthy they will be right, and if not, they will be wrong. Such language was new in the mouth of a legislator, but not at all new in itself. It was an adoption of the 158 ECCE HOMO.

They placed it in reason, and regarded passion as the antag- onistic power which must be controlled and coerced by it. Christ also considers it necessary to control the passions, but he places them under the dominion not of reason but of a new and more powerful passion.
