To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
In it I proposed to invite the reader to accompany me in a hasty ramble through the cemeteries longest in existence, and while pointing out a grave here and there, to briefly tell what little I may have picked up regarding its tenant, and to recall what claim he or she may have had to be remembered in such a retrospect. It occurred to me, too, that such an excursion would give an oppor- tunity of urging the reasons why some of the tombs at least should be saved from the ruin, to which so many h...ave gone, and all are hastening. But so much space has been given to those who lived in Calcutta in the last century, that none is left for those who died and were there buried. My sepulchral gossip, therefore, must be suppressed. Perhaps it is as well. I fear it must be recognized that English people, either at home or abroad, are animated by no strong sentiment regarding what may be called the sacred relics of the past. If they were, there would scarcely be room for a Society which is at work even in England at this moment, having for its object the preservation of the memorials of the dead in the churches and churchyards of Great Britain.* This Society has a heavy task in trying to secure the sympathy and support of a mere fraction of an apathetic public.
