It clearly illustrates the disparity between Montana's average wages and U.S. total average wages. In 1970, Montana wages were 85 percent of US wages and then rose to 90 percent of US wages by 1 979. Beginning in 1984, the disparity between Montana and the US started to expand. By 2001, Montana wages had declined to only 70 percent of ...US wages and by 2005 had risen to 72 percent of US wages. While U.S. wages increased only 1.76 percent from 2003 to 2005, Montana's wages rose 2.38 percent during the same time period. The Census Bureau provides data on median family income by county and family income distribution by income range. Median family income is the income amount where one-half of families have incomes above the median, and one-half of families have incomes below the median. Per capita income is total income divided by total population.
