When native it is alloyed with a little platinum and iridium, or with gold and silver, as in the Porpezite of Peru, which con- sists, according to Berzelius, of 85. 98 gold, 9. 85 palladium, and 4. 17 silver. It is sometimes used for the finely divided scales of mathematical and astronomical instruments; for the smaller chemical weights; and i per cent added to steel produces a smoother cutting edge.
