106 LOSING AND FINDING him ; the horizon is narrow enough, but the landscape is homely and intimate, so fair in its details of stream and meadow and coppice and homestead, and so captivating that he were well content to remain there, and cannot think that anything could be more desirable. Then comes the strange mystical desire native to the human heart to climb. He rises, turns his back upon that dear and gentle beauty, and begins the ascent ; he lets it go ; quite literally, it seems... to drop away from him ; in a few moments it is lost to sight and sound ; but when the new resting- place in the height is attained he finds to his delight that all that he seemed to lose is given back to him, and in grander perspective, mightier setting.
So it is with that process commonly spoken of as the Death to Self ; the self to which we are to die is the narrow delusive self, the self of which we are aware in opposition to the not-self, the self which is constantly in friction and en- tanglement with the external world ; this is the self we are to sacrifice and renounce ; and, as is now clearly seen, in the interests of the true Self, the whole Self.
