But under the extreme condition resulting from electric shock artificial respiration must be employed to supply... oxygen, so that oxygenated blood may help sustain the heart action, else there will be no interval of rest allowed the exhausted brain in which to recover. While THEORIES OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK 23 the irrital^ility of the brain, which sulisides immediatel}' after the shock, will within a few minutes recover, everything depends finally, where artificial respiration is employed, on whether the action of the heart continues or not.
A second theory is that of asphyxiation, or the non-oxygenation of the blood.
