Commercial petrol, having a specific gravity of '72 at 15° C, is composed principally of a mixture of hexane and heptane — CgH^^ and CyH^g.
The lightest petrol or gasolene supplied, having a specific gravity of about '64, is composed almost wholly of pentane — CgHjg. This very light petrol is now being used for flying machines. It will be seen from its chemical formula that it contains more energy per lb. weight than the others, owing to the increased proportion of hydrogen.
