Nitrogen pentoxid is prepared by the action of phosphorus pentoxid on very concentrated nitric acid at low temperatures. It is a white, crystalline substance melting at 30 with partial decomposition, while at 47 it decom- poses rapidly into oxygen and nitrogen dioxid.

When the temperature is lowered, the reverse changes occur; we have to do with a rever- sible reaction.
