Fourcroy, however, has clearly shewn, that this pretended element consisted merely of minute particles of bodies, detached by heat and dissolved in the atmosphere, which becomes loaded with them, and conveys them to the olfactory organs. According to this theory, all bodies are odoriferous, since caloric may sublimate some of the par- ticles of those which are least volatile. Linnseus and Lorry had endea- voured to class odours according to the sensations which they produce ;* * Linnaeus adm...its seven classes of odours : 1st class, amlrosiac odours, those of the rose and of musk belong to this class, they are characterised by their tenacity ; OF THE ORGAN OF SMELL. 231 M. Fourcroy has been guided by the chemical nature of substances : but, however advantageous this last classification may be, it is difficult to include in it the infinite variety of odours which exhale from sub- stances of all kinds ; and it is perhaps as difficult to arrange them in classes, as the bodies from which they are produced.
