Henry II. Is said to have been the first who wore a pair of silk knit stockings ; though the in- vention originally came from Spain, whence silk stockings were brought over to Henry VIII. Was very earnest for the in- troduction of this useful manufacture into his dominions; and strongly recommended the planting of mulberry-trees for the pro- pagation of silk-worms; but, unhappily, with- out effect.
