Greytown was the Atlantic terminus of the proposed canal, and the mere thought of a shadow of governmental authority being there exercised by the British was enough to alarm the jealousy of every patriotic American. It was nothing that the near presence of the British was an almost certain guarantee for the maintenance of peace in that quarter.
