HERAT. 243 intentional. No one desired to appear too'ricli ! It reminds one, however, very mucli of Captain Oonolly's description of the state of things at Herat when he... was there many years ago. The probable truth is that Herat has improved still more since 1872, and that it is now a fairly thriving town. But the neighbourhood is probably much as it was in Terrier's time, and it certainly has not resumed that attractive appearance of corn-fields, orchards, and vineyards which once belonged to it.
But Herat is still something more than the shadow of a name. It lives in the memory of a mighty past, and it may aspire, on the grounds of its position and its innate wealth, to a prosperous and brilliant future.
