What reading level is English Literature: Modern book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Browning's _Sordello_ is obscurebecause he knows too much about mediaeval Italian history; Donne's_Anniversary_ because he is too deeply read in mediaeval scholasticismand speculation. Both make themselves more difficult to the reader whois familiar with the poetry of their contemporaries by the disconcertingfreshness of their point of view. Seventeenth century love poetry wasidyllic and idealist; Donne's is passionate and realistic to the pointof cynicism. To read him after reading Browne or J...onson is to have thesame shock as reading Browning after Tennyson. Both poets are salutaryin the strong and biting antidote they bring to sentimentalism inthought and melodious facility in writing. They are the corrective oflazy thinking and lazy composition. Elizabethan love poetry was written on a convention which though it wasused with manliness and entire sincerity by Sidney did not escape thefate of its kind. Dante's love for Beatrice, Petrarch's for Laura, thegallant and passionate adoration of Sidney for his Stella became themodels for a dismal succession of imaginary woes.
