The first, because it transgresses our fixed speech-habit; the second, because their con- stitution comes short of true prosody. The latter fault can be easily remedied, as readers from the first dis- covered, and the lines can be treated as native English lines, their supposed structure ...being a myth ; the former fault is irremediable. Such is my belief, and I hope not again to return to this question, during what remains of this volume. . Readers should now, at any rate, be able to distinguish between two such different things as accentual and quantitative hexameters, though eminent critics of our own day have sometimes failed to make this distinction.
A few treatises of wider outlook were published during this decade. Lectures on the English Language^ by George P. Marsh [not in my original list], had gone through more than one edition in America before it came to us in i86a.
