George Gascoigne, the poet, tells how, in the winter of 1574, he visited him at Lime bouse and asked him " how he spent his time in this loitering vacation from martial stratagems. " By way of answer Gilbert took his friend into his study and there showed him "sundry profitable and very com- mendable... exercises which he had perfected plainly with his own pen. " The chief of these " exercises " was a learned ' Discourse to prove a Passage by the North- West to Cathay and the East Indies/ which Gascoigne borrowed, and, either with or without permission, lost no time in publishing. * This ' Discourse ' so clearly and completely sets forth the arguments on the subject that were in force during Elizabeth's reign that we shall best understand the state of opinion thereupon, if we look at it in some detail.
