Lady Buckinghamshire and two other ladies of position were, in fact, condemned, not indeed to the pillory, but to pay $o each for illegal gambling. It was proved that they had gaming parties by rotation in each other's houses and sat gambling till three or four in the morning. " 1 Of course, the nineteenth century is by no means blameless in this respect, but at least the Government does not now, as was the case then, encourage a taste for gambling by multiplying public lotteries. From the same author we catch another glimpse of the fashionable amuse- ments of the day, of which Victor Hugo has given a picturesque account in his novel, L'homme qui rit.
