CHAPTER XrX Urease and Nucleases These enzymes break the connection between nitrogen and carbon with the entrance of water, as do the hydro- lytic enzymes, but differ greatly from the proper hydro- lytic enzymes. They bring about the following reactions: H2NCNH2 + 2H2O = CO3H2 + 2NH3 II Carbonic O Acid Ammonia Urea N=C NH, HN— CO (Urease) HC C— NH + H20 = HC C— NH + NH3 (Adenase) II II >CH N— C— N^ Adenine HN— CO II II >CH N— C— N^ Hypoxanthine HN— CO H^NC C— NH
...N— C— N^ Guanine OC C-NH (Guanase) \CH + H,0= I II Vh H— C— N^ Xanthine Urease is found in many bacteria which provoke fer- mentation of urine eliminated from the body, or, in pathological cases, within the bladder. It has not been observed in the organs of the animal body. According to Miquel, we can extract and separate urease from the 121 122 ENZYMES bodies of the bacteria.' Adenase and guanase were first found in yeast by Lehmann ^ in Kossel's laboratory. In recent years they have been found in the liver, kidney, and other organs and investigated by Schittenhelm ' and Jones ^ and their collaborators.
