What reading level is Episodes in the Life of An Indian book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
9 Life of an Indian Chaplain. 243 " His house is called a hut, and his children he speaks of as ' monkeys ' or c calves ;' and when speaking he must place his hand over his mouth, lest the breath should go forth and pollute the person whom he is address- ing. " The natives of Malabar are all superstitious, from the king on his throne to the poor out- cast slave and worshipper of demons. A black cat seen on a journey, a crow flying across the path, a black lizard falling on any one, a white liza...rd chirruping, all portend evil, and they will imitate the latter to nullify the effect of the evil omen. Oftentimes people may be seen suddenly stopping and then turning back ; they have received some supposed evil omen, and they must return from whence they came. There are a host of demons worshipped by the people of Travancore. I will mention a few, and arn indebted to a book full of interest on Travancore and its customs, by the Rev. S. Mateer, a London missionary, who for many years has been resident in Travancore.
