SpONTANEOTTS PoINTINCl TeSTS The spontaneous tests consist of determining the patient's ability, witli tlie eyes shut, to find the finger of the examiner which he has ]>i'eviously felt. All normal indixdduals are always able to find the finger almost or quite as readily as if the eyes were open. Shoulder from above (Fig. ol ) shows the upper extremity of the patient extended straight in front of him. His fist is closed with the exce])fion of the foi'efingei-, which is extended straight in front... of him. He is lilindfolded ; this is not necessary, provided we are sui-e that the patient can be trusted to keep his eyes closed. The examiner places the finger of the ])atient directly above his own forefinger. The jiatient is told to fix in his mind the exact iiosition of t])e examiner's finger. The examiner then says "Up." The ])atient raises his arm to the vertical ])osition and then innnediately brings it Ijack again to find tlie examiner's fingei". Fig. 52 shows the same test, but the moving ])ictures were taken from above and behind tlie patient, in order to show more clearly tliat there is no lateral deviation of his finger.
