When Negro Slavery was abolished in the West Indian Islands, it was proposed to transplant the free Negroes to British Guiana, but the attempt failed, and in 1838, the first importation of 400 Indian Coolies took place. In 1844-45, the number of Indian Coolies imported was 4,616.
Between 1850 and 1870, about 65,000 Indian Coolies were imported, out of whom 7,000 returned to India during the same period.
