When Negro Slavery was abolished in the West Indian Islands, it was proposed to transplant the free Negroes to British Guiana, but the attempt failed, and in 1838, the first importation of 400 Indian Coolies took place. In 1844-45, the number of Indian Coolies imported was 4,616. Between 1850 and 1870, about 65,000 Indian Coolies were imported, out of whom 7,000 returned to India during the same period. In 1871, the total popula- tion of the Colony was two I^akhs, out of whom 43,000 were Indian...s, half of them working on the Plantations under Indentures, about 9,000 were Free Labourers, 142 ESSAYS ON INDIAN ECONOMICS. and the rest, about 10,000, were otherwise employed in Towns and Villages. The Labour Laws in Guiana are as stringent and one-sided as those of Mauritius.
