Mr. Scar- borough says above of this muck, that "some portions of it when thrown out to the weather became covered with a thin white crust that has the taste of alum or saltpetre." Doubtless the sample sent for analysis is one of this kind, and therefore represents the worst quality. The "thin white crust" is the sulphates of iron and alumina, and the presence of these matters in the lower muck accounts for the poor growth of grass, and for the indifferent results of the trial on corn.
