When He was asked which was the great commandment in the law, His reply was, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second like unto it is this. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hangeth the whole law, and the prophets" (St Matt. Xxii. 37-40).
Now it will be observed that Christ puts the love of God as the primary duty of man.
