The Albanian language has preserved many elements of the neighbouring Etruscan speech, and there can be little doubt that the Albanian word x/apTf , which means * high,' * magnificent,' is iden- tical with the Etruscan Larthi.^ If the word be transliterated into a Ugric form, we should expect to find the I becoming a y, or a dj.^ This phonetic ' Lars, the Eoman form, is still ased as a personal name among the Lapps. Lessing, in his Norwegian journey, was accompanied bj a Lapp named La/rs, Klemm..., OuUur' OescMchte, vol. iii. p. 64.
* The la'da of the Ljcian inscriptions, which means * wife ' or ' lady,' may possibly be an abraded form of the Etniscan larthia.

In the Taigi, which is a dialect of the southern branch of the Samojeds, we find the form djar with the same meaning. This brings us to the title of the Eussian emperor, the Tzar^ an appellation which is doubtless of Tataric origin.
