At first the university had no buildings; lectures being given in convents and other rooms in the Rue cle la Fouarre — in the Street as it was called. As colleges were gradually endowed and buildings erected, the great majority of the students took up their ...residence there. By degrees members of this or that university faculty were selected and placed as lecturers in the colleges. " Sometimes nominated, always controlled, and only degraded by their faculty, these lecturers were recognized as among its teachers ; and the same privileges accorded to the attendance on their college courses, as on those delivered by other graduates in the common schools of the university." ^ They were in fact both college and university lecturers at the same time. Soon the classes of each college were thrown open to members of all the others ; and even martinets,^ that is, students of the university who had not attached themselves to any college, were allowed to attend their lectures.
