The ancient form of the Chinese character for water was similar to the eleventh sign of the Zodiac, and the symbol for distress consisted of the same sign with a bar across, fs picturing the stoppage of the irrigation in the rice- field.
It is also found in the symbols employed by the Egyptians to represent water J^ll3 mai \\C2 mou. This symbol J\ ] 1 1~~~*. _H\ 2T/"""* J conveyed the idea of freshness or flowing.
