Ch...amplain a few years pre- viously had been intrusted with an expedition which founded Quebec; and in the following year had 1608 joined a parly of Hurons and Algonquins against the five nations of Indians who inhabited the northern wilds of New York.
Champlain returned to France in 1609, and was received with great distinction at Fontainebleau.
The king listened attentively to the account which he gave of the new colony, which was henceforth called New France. But De Monts, whose patent was aheady expired, could obtain no aid.
