These three are the masters whose opinions it has been the work of subsequent sages to explain and extend.
They taught a politico-ethical system which was pro- foundly pagan, inasmuch as it concerned itself mainly with moral well-being in this world, and took but scanty notice of a future life ; and they despised physical science, as tending to distract attention from the really important question, ' What ought I do ?
