The Royal Institution had been kept alive by the lectures given by Faraday. He had no grant from the Royal Society or from Government, except the pension in 1835 ; the Institution could afford to give him only 100 a year, to which the Fullerian professorship added about 100 more.

In 1862 he was examined by the Public School Commissioners, and among his most memorable answers was the FARADAY 167 expression of his surprise at the opposition which had been raised to the introduction of natural knowledge into schools.
