To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Dropsy, or ascites, is a watery condition of the abdomen, due to a collection of serum in the cavity. When seen in chicks it is usually due to improper feeding or bad sanitary surroundings, producing an anaemic condition. In fowls it may be caused as in chicks, but is more often due to some obstruction of the circulation of the blood, either by pressure of tumor or structural disease of abdominal organs. Treatment. — Sunshine, good food, and clean houses and runs, combined with purgatives and t...apping, will help correct this condition. Tapping is done by inserting a hollow needle or trochar through the skin and muscles of the abdomen into the cavity, and allowing the fluid to escape. Put one table- spoonful sulphate magnesia into one quart of drinking water, and use for a few days. Follow this with iodide of potassium ten grains to one pint water, to be used for drinking. If successful in curing the bird, market it at the earliest possible date. Never breed from such birds. Enteritis.
