And checked, defeated, strives again, That round his brow (at ninety-nine!) Laurel or Cypress leaves may twine.
What if the Laurel wreath be won, And Victory crown the race we run!
If Death, who soon will still the heart That bore so well its earthly part, Do not with amaranthine crown, Beplace the wreath we must lay down.
