Scotland had preceded England by the founding of a chair of agi'iculture at Edinburgh Univer- sity in 1790 by Sir William Pulteney, which was held for forty years by Dr. Coventry. At Marischal College, Aberdeen, a lectureship in agricultural chemistry was estab- lished in 1840. Professor Hitchcock reported five institutions in England, of which one only was of superior grade, and the two lectureships here referred to in Scotland. Ireland had far more to offer by way of example. Here Professor H...itchcock found one superior school, twenty-five intermediate, and thirty-four inferior schools of agri- culture as well as three chairs of agriculture in university colleges. In 1838 the sup>erior agricultural school was established at Glasnevin with a model farm attached. At the 82 FEDERAL AID FOR VOCATIONAL EDUCATION same time a number of model agricultural schools, corresponding to the intermediate schools referred to by Professor Hitchcock, were organized under the Commission of National Education.
